Gardening for Schools – Sensory Garden Project at St Ronan’s Primary School, Newry

t Gardening for Schools, we were delighted to visit St Ronan’s Primary School, Newry, where we worked with the Eco-Team across two engaging sessions to develop a new sensory garden. Together with Kieran Gallagher, the pupils designed and planted a series of themed flower beds, each focused on a different sense—sight, touch, smell, taste and movement. Gardening offered the children a calm and mindful break from the classroom, allowing them to connect with nature while learning valuable environmental skills.
A special highlight of the project was the planting of the school’s very own apple tree, which the pupils eagerly look forward to harvesting in Autumn 2026. The Eco-Team will continue to care for the garden throughout the autumn and winter months, and we are excited to see the vibrant colours and blossoms emerge in spring to stimulate their sense of sight. This project marks another meaningful step in the school’s journey toward maintaining its Green Flag in 2027, and we are proud to support their enthusiastic efforts in sustainability and outdoor learning.
